Veteran Aviation Mentorship Program

No Veteran Should Have to Navigate Their Aviation Journey Alone.

Navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and understanding how to maximize education benefits for flight training can be overwhelming. Our owner, Kaohu Detwiler, knows this experience firsthand.

After experiencing the challenges, frustrations, and uncertainties of using VA benefits for flight training, Kaohu found himself becoming a resource for fellow veterans facing similar obstacles. Without a mentor to guide him through the process, he spent countless hours researching, asking questions, overcoming setbacks, and figuring things out on his own.

As word spread, more veterans began reaching out to Kaohu for advice, guidance, and assistance. What started as occasional conversations quickly grew into something much bigger.

From One Veteran to a Nationwide Network

While attending flight training in Oregon, Kaohu discovered that many fellow veterans were unaware of the full potential of their VA education benefits. Some struggled to understand eligibility requirements, while others were unsure which flight training programs qualified or how to navigate the VA approval process.

Recognizing the need, Kaohu began mentoring veteran students at his flight school, sharing the knowledge and experiences he had gained throughout his own aviation journey.

Before long, his mentorship extended beyond Oregon. Veterans from across the United States, and even as far away as Guam, began reaching out for assistance.

As the number of veterans seeking guidance continued to grow, Kaohu realized that one person could only help so many. He needed to build something bigger.

That realization led to the creation of the Veteran Aviation Mentorship Program.

Our Mission: Veterans Helping Veterans

Our mission is simple: Ensure that no veteran has to navigate the complexities of VA benefits and aviation training alone.

Our mentorship program connects veterans who are beginning their aviation journeys with fellow veterans who have already navigated the process.

By sharing firsthand experiences, practical knowledge, and valuable resources, our mentors help veterans better understand their available benefits, explore aviation training opportunities, and make informed decisions about their futures.

Whether you're considering flight training for the first time, researching schools, exploring VA education benefits, or already enrolled in an aviation program, our goal is to connect you with someone who understands the journey.

We believe the knowledge gained through experience should be shared, not withheld.

Our Philosophy: Knowledge Should Never Be Gatekept

Throughout his military and law enforcement careers, Kaohu learned that effective leadership isn't about keeping knowledge or opportunities to yourself. It's about empowering others to succeed.

As a Sergeant in the United States Air Force and later a Lieutenant in law enforcement, he emphasized transparency, honesty, mentorship, and teamwork.

That philosophy became the foundation of this program.

"A Team Is Better Than Just One Man Alone."

We don't believe in gatekeeping information, withholding opportunities, or forcing other veterans to repeat the same struggles we've already overcome.

Instead, we believe that veterans have a responsibility to support one another. The lessons learned by one veteran can become the foundation for another veteran's success.

When one veteran succeeds, they create an opportunity to help the next.

How Our Mentorship Program Can Help

Our mentorship team provides experience-based guidance in several areas:

  • Understanding VA Education Benefits: Explore benefits that may be available for aviation training, including the GI Bill and Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E).

  • Navigating Flight Training: Learn from veterans who have experienced the challenges of selecting flight schools, understanding training requirements, and progressing through aviation programs.

  • Exploring Training Opportunities: Receive guidance on researching aviation colleges, approved flight training programs, and potential career pathways.

  • Overcoming Common Challenges: Connect with veterans who understand the frustrations of navigating VA processes, training delays, and unexpected obstacles.

  • Building Your Aviation Network: Establish meaningful relationships with fellow veterans who share your passion for aviation and want to see you succeed.

Our mentors share their personal experiences and practical knowledge. Benefit eligibility, funding approval, and individual program requirements remain subject to official VA determinations.
